I recently watched “Love Over Money”, which is a documentary about John Robbins. John Robbins was an heir to the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream empire. He was.
As the documentary explains, John grew up in a world of ice cream. The family home sported an ice cream cone shaped pool. He grew up often accompanying dad to the office and learning about every aspect of the Baskin Robbins business.
But then John started seeing things he couldn’t be a part of. Factory farms, the effects of sugar and cream in the American diet, and sure, the family’s involvement within the Republican Party. John’s family was part of the Nixon/Reagan crowd. John preferred to be part of the Southern Poverty Law Center and their actions, even leaving home under darkness to do just that.
I knew who John Robbins is because I bought a copy of “Diet For A New America” when it first came out. I read it cover to cover. I thought it was a great book. I learned a great deal on food production, factory farms, and feedlots-and I was fascinated.
The book really made me rethink food choices and almost forced me into to picking the better option for food every time. Sometimes the better food options cost more than your food budget allows for.
Most of the movie is narrated by John Robbins himself. There are occasional photos of his family and himself. Usually I’m not a big fan of this type of documentary style, but this was pretty pleasant and easy to follow.
If you get a chance to watch this, I highly recommend it.
